Safer Internet Day: supporting teachers in promoting digital wellbeing

https://school-education.ec.europa.eu/en/discover/news/safer-internet-day-supporting-teachers-promoting-digital-wellbeing

What is Safer Internet Day (SID)?

Safer Internet Day is a global initiative celebrated every February to promote a safer and more responsible online environment for children and young people. A flagship initiative of the European Commission, supported by the Insafe and INHOPE networks in Europe, SID brings together schools, parents, policymakers and organisations worldwide.

Celebrated in over 160 countries, the day raises awareness about key online issues, including cyberbullying, digital wellbeing, privacy, artificial intelligence, age-appropriate experiences and respectful communication.

How to support digital safety in schools

Discover three ways teachers and educators can promote digital wellbeing and safer online lives.

1 – Integrate digital safety into the classroom

Use SID as a starting point to incorporate digital wellbeing issues into everyday lessons. Discuss topics such as cyberbullying, safe social media use, protecting personal information and maintaining healthy screen time habits. Resources from the Better Internet for Kids learning cornerprovide ready-to-use lesson plans, webinars and guidance to make these conversations practical and engaging for pupils.

2 – Explain how online platforms protect children (DSA guidelines)

Introduce pupils to the new Digital Services Act (DSA) guidelines, which require online platforms to protect children. Educators can use the DSA for YOUth toolkit and a family-friendly booklet(available in all EU languages), as well as a webinar, to explain how platforms handle harmful content, privacy and reporting, helping pupils understand their rights online.

3 – Connect with global SID activities

Engage your pupils by exploring what’s happening for Safer Internet Day in your country. The SID interactive map links to country pages featuring local and international activities, workshops, campaigns and youth-led projects. This shows pupils the global scale of online safety initiativesand inspires them to take part in their own classroom or school events.

And if you’re based in Europe, why not connect with your national Safer Internet Centre to see what support they can offer you as an educator, not just on SID but all year round?

What the EU is doing to address cyberbullying

Combating the growing trend of abusive and harmful behaviour online requires a coordinated, cross-border approach. The forthcoming EU action plan against cyberbullying will support a coordinated response to cyberbullying, leveraging existing regulatory frameworks such as the Digital Services Act (DSA), to ensure a high level of safety and protection for minors across the entire EU.

Safer Internet Day is an opportunity for educators to lead by example, creating safe, inclusive and supportive digital environments.

Safer Internet Day is supported by the European Commission, with funding provided by the Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL). Find out more about the European Commission’s strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+).

eTwinning annual theme 2026: Skills for life

The eTwinning theme for the 2025/2026 school year is ‘Skills for life’, supporting EU in its work to improve basic skills across Europe.

Basic skills action plan

The new annual theme supports the ‘Basic Skills Action Plan’,  adopted in March 2025 as part of the European Commission’s Union of Skills strategy. The plan aims to raise achievement in 5 essential skills: literacy, mathematics, science, digital and citizenship.

  • Literacy: understanding, using, evaluating and reflecting, orally and in writing, using visual, audio and digital materials across disciplines and contexts
  • Mathematics: reasoning mathematically; formulating, using and interpreting mathematics to solve real-world problems and make well-founded, data-based judgements/decisions
  • Science: engaging with science-related issues and ideas as a reflective individual (explaining phenomena scientifically, evaluating and designing scientific enquiries, interpreting data and evidence)
  • Digital: confidently, critically and responsibly engaging with digital technologies for learning, working and participating in society (information literacy, communication, media literacy, digital content creation, online safety, digital wellbeing)
  • Citizenship: behaving responsibly and participating fully in civic life, grounded in an understanding of social, economic, legal and political structures (civic and democratic concepts, institutions and processes: e.g. democracy, media literacy, crisis preparedness, respect for others, freedom of speech)

These 5 basic skills  support individuals in thinking critically, engaging with their communities, staying healthy, adapting to a rapidly changing job market and navigating today’s complexities, including digital tools and artificial intelligence (AI).

In a time of growing disinformation and polarisation, these skills are becoming more important than ever. They support informed, active citizenship and are key to building resilient, inclusive societies.

Basic skills and eTwinning

We are calling on educators to collaborate this year to ensure that all pupils will gain the skills they need to thrive. Here’s how eTwinning will support teachers:

  • Encourage the design and implementation of projects linking basic skills to real-life scenarios, backed by practical teaching materials, articles, eTwinning kits and project examples.
  • Provide resources to teach and assess these skills creatively and inclusively through eTwinning projects, for example, by using reading and writing to share ideas and stories, applying maths and science to solve practical problems, and building digital skills in a safe and responsible way.
  • Promote student agency by empowering pupils to take ownership of their learning, and help them understand the importance and relevance of basic skills in their daily lives and future opportunities
  • Offer teachers a range of professional development courses and activities, enabling them to enhance their competences, and share best practices with peers

Join the ‘Basic skills in action’ eTwinning featured group

To further support this annual theme, the ‘Basic skills in action’ eTwinning featured group will serve as the central hub for all related activities and materials. Teachers can access updates, articles, and connect with peers through webinars and forums.

Join us in making ‘Skills for life’ a dynamic, impactful theme that empowers pupils and teacher alike, across Europe and beyond.

Guiding principles for protecting fundamental academic values

Final report

This report puts forward a proposal for establishing Guiding Principles on fundamental academic values and outlines the background for this proposal.

The Guiding Principles proposed in this report further build on and constitute an important part of the EU’s contribution to and enhancement of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

They are based on the EHEA Ministerial Communiques (Paris 2018, Rome 2020, Tirana 2024) which outline and define six fundamental academic values:

(1) Academic freedom; (2) Academic integrity; (3) Institutional autonomy; (4) Staff and student participation in higher education governance; (5) Public responsibility for higher education; (6) Public responsibility of higher education.

The Guiding Principles consider also the work conducted within other contexts (both within and beyond the EU) and avoid duplication of efforts. These include standards and projects developed by the Council of Europe and UNESCO, the Magna Charta Universitatum, the Autonomy Scorecard developed by the European University Association and the Academic Freedom Index, many of which represent the higher education community of institutions, staff and students.

The Guiding Principles also work in synergy to the work done in the context of the European Research Area (ERA) and the commitment in the Regulation establishing Horizon Europe that the Programme is committed to promoting respect for academic freedom in all countries benefiting from its funds.

The proposed Guiding Principles have been the subject of consultations with stakeholders, including academic experts, rectors and university networks.

They have also been considered by the EEA Strategic Framework Working Group on Higher Education and the Working Group on Fundamental Values of the European Higher Education Area.

The Guiding Principles address the main institutional actors in European higher education: higher education institutions, national public authorities and the European Union itself.

These principles pertain to:

(1) implementing the commitments on fundamental values undertaken by Ministers within the European Higher Education Area;

(2) protecting the fundamental academic values through legislation;

(3) the role of higher education leadership;

(4) structures and practises to address violations of fundamental academic values and to protect staff and students;

(5) raising awareness of the fundamental academic values and of their importance to both democracy and high-quality learning, teaching and research;

(6) putting fundamental academic values at the heart of the higher education community;

(7) confidentiality clauses conditioning the funding of teaching and research projects;

(8) encouraging student and staff engagement in building a culture of fundamental academic values;

(9) integrating fundamental academic values in international partnerships;

(10) funding for higher education and research;

(11) quality assurance in respect of fundamental academic values.
