In this survey, we look at how schools can best prepare for emergencies and support pupils in developing risk awareness and relevant skills.
Schools are central to our communities and play a key role in keeping children and young people safe. In recent years, Europe has faced a growing number of crises, such as natural disasters, long-term climate change impacts, pandemics and security challenges.
The European Commission’s Preparedness Union Strategy(2025) calls for stronger resilience across society – including in education. In this context, schools are encouraged to reflect on their capacity to prevent, respond to and recover from crises in a way that safeguards pupils, staff and the wider community.
This survey aims to better understand how schools are currently addressing preparedness: what guidelines, resources or collaborations are in place, what kind of training and awareness-raising activities are available, and what support may still be needed.
